It's best to use a soft wood when teaching beginners. Balsa wood is very soft, however it is also very expensive. Other, less costly, alternatives are Pine, Cedar, Fir, Lime, and Redwood.
Avoid using plywood because it creates many splinters, also MDF is not recommended because of the risk of inhaling dust when cutting.
